If you plan on flying or entering a federal building or military base – you might need to get a new driver’s license.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced Monday that starting Oct. 1, 2020 Wisconsin residents will have to get a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license.

A REAL ID-compliant has a white-and-black star in the top-right corner of your license. Wisconsin has been issuing the licenses since 2013.

"From our perspective here at TSA, REAL ID adds another layer of security by further preventing and deterring the ability to evade detection by using a fraudulent identification," Mark Lendvay, the federal security director of the Transportation Security Administration in Wisconsin, said.

To get a REAL ID-compliant license, head to your local DMV office. Lendvay advised people not to wait.

"Do yourself a favor and get the REAL ID card this fall because next year you’re more than likely to be caught in the mad dash to get the REAL ID here in Wisconsin and, for that matter, nationwide."
