Police responded to reports of short fired at Elver Park park on the west side of Madison Saturday night.

A large gathering was taking place in the small shelter to commemorate the 20th anniversary of a shooting death. Dozens of children were in the area of the small shelter when shots were reportedly fired, according to Madison Police Chief Mike Koval's blog.

According to witnesses, an unknown person fired approximately three shots into the air at Elver Park at 1250 McKenna Blvd. at 10:00 p.m., according to the blog post.

Hundreds of people were seen fleeing the park as officers arrived. A shell casing was found on scene.

Officers located broken glass scattered throughout the park area and dozens of half-full liquor bottles. Police are still investigating.
