SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) --- A six-year-old girl receives a grant from The Disney Channel, and she's using that money to give back.
The Sun Prairie girl is helping the organization Box of Balloons.
Maycee Wells is in kindergarten at Northside Elementary. She's received a $500 grant and now is helping kids her age have the birthday of their dreams.
The school held an assembly Wednesday, so Maycee could give the boxes to local organizations like Porchlight, The Early Childhood Initiative and Shelter From the Storm Ministries. The boxes contain everything someone would need for a birthday party: a pinata, decorations, cupcakes and a birthday gift. Maycee says she couldn't imagine not having a birthday party.
"To help kids in need, we made 5 birthday boxes for kids who can't have birthdays," Maycee says.
Her mom says not only has this experience helped other kids Maycees age, it's helping her as well.
"She brought home a thing from school the other day on, if you were president what would you do? And it was to give kids in need shoes, so I think it just helps inspire her to just look at the needs of others other than her own," Sarah Wells, her mother, says.
The founder of Box of Balloons is grateful to have such a young girl give back to her organization.
"When I found out that she applied for this grant and then won, it was just so overwhelming to see just her little heart and wanting to give back and to do good, and she loves birthday celebrations and just her desire to make that happen for so many other kids, so it was really exciting," Nicole Moll, Box of Balloons founder, says.
