SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) -- A violent offender in Sun Prairie has surrendered after initially barricading himself inside a home, according to the Sun Prairie Police Department.

According to police, officers responded to a home in the 100 block Tower Drive to make contact with the individual, who reportedly slammed the door on police, spurring officers set up a perimeter.

Because he had a history of being armed, police treated the situation as if he had a weapon at this time.

During the incident, Sun Prairie Police urged people to avoid the area near the home, which is between Grandview and Crossing Ridge, as they worked to contain the situation.

The individual, whose name has not been released, has since surrendered peacefully to authorities, police said.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this story indicated the suspect was wanted in connection with an armed robbery, based on information from police. An update from a SPPD spokesperson indicates the individual was a person of interest as a violent offender.
