A 53-year-old man was arrested after he tried to steal 90 pounds of lamb from Mercado Marimar located 2102 South Park Street on Monday around 6 p.m.

According to the Madison Police Department, the suspect entered a trailer behind the Mexican and American grocery store that contained a locked freezer chest containing meat and pried it open.

Police say the owner of the grocery store learned something was wrong when an employee heard noises coming from behind the store. The suspect was then observed pushing a cart full of the stolen meat down the street and the owner started following him at a safe distance until police arrived.

The suspect, Kenneth McNeal, age 53 of Madison, told police someone else had told him to take the mean and he had done nothing wrong. McNeal also fought with the police and spit on them before being arrested.

Police reviewed surveillance video and reviewed the facts before arresting McNeal for burglary, criminal damage to property and discharge of bodily fluids at public safety worker.
