MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) Verona Area Community Theater presents both a female and male version of "The Odd Couple."
Those shows are from Feb. 7-16. They will alternate showings between the male and female versions, so come be sure to catch both shows!
The Male Version: This classic Neil Simon comedy opens as a group of the guys assemble for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed, and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born.
20 Years later, Neil Simon rewrote The Odd Couple with Female Leads: In this version Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is. Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. Simon wanted to explore new possibilities and, in this case, turning Oscar into Olive, here a career-minded news writer not concerned with neatness at home. Similarly, Florence remains the nervous self-involved hypochondriac and neat-freak.
