MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- There are plenty of story lines surrounding the Wisconsin Badger football game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday afternoon, including postseason implications and a deep-seated rivalry for Paul Bunyan's axe. None more important than UW Marching Band Director Mike Leckrone leading the band for the final time at Camp Randall Stadium after 50 years a top the ladder.

Today, the band world says goodbye to a legend.

The Badger Bash tailgate party is already packed to celebrate UW Marching Band Director Mike Leckrone's last home game.
Not only is it the University of Wisconsin's last regular season football game, it's also Mick Leckrone's last go around at Camp Randall. He started directing the band in 1969 and will end his career at age 82.

NBC15's Sports Director Mike "Jocko" Jacques got a rare view of Leckrone's ladder prior to it's final use at Camp Randall.
Leckrone made his grand entrance to the Badger Bash tailgate party, and the crowd loved it.
Leckrone then directed the band to perform "Sweet Caroline."
As game time approached, members of the Badgers football team began preparing for kickoff.
The legend himself walked out for the final pregame show before kickoff.
Leckrone stood focused as he stood atop his ladder before filling Camp Randall Stadium.
Leckrone was honored after the first quarter. The team will perform at halftime.
Leckrone, longtime director of the University of Wisconsin–Madison Marching Band, announced he would be stepping down at the end of the 2018-19 academic year.
This fall he will have been on the field of Camp Randall for 50 of the stadium’s 101 years. Only Bucky Badger has reigned there longer.
