MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) --- A brand new course at UW-Madison will certify students to fly drones commercially.

The class comes after the university recently announced a new drone use policy.

Anyone who wants to fly a drone on campus now must fill out an application to do so.

The goal of the class is to begin educating the UW-Madison community on flying drones commercially.

"it's kind of like the wild west when we talk about the regulatory environment because not a lot of people know the rules and that's why this class is really important," said Chris Johnson, director of UW flight lab.

He says some local rules include not flying at night, flying below 400 feet and not flying over people.

However he says he routinely sees people violating these guidelines.
