21-year old dead in car vs. pole crash in Monona

MONONA, Wis. (WMTV) - A 21-year-old man is dead after his car struck a pole in Monona Monday evening.

Dane County Communications says the accident happened in the 4600 block of Winnequah Road around 7:21 p.m.

According to the Monona Police Department, when officers arrived on the scene, they pronounced the death of 21-year-old man. Witnesses told police that the car was speeding before the crash.

“Basically I can tell you that this is a fatality accident," said Monona Asst. Fire Chief Dan Eklof. "The best that we can ascertain is a vehicle was northbound on Winnequah Road at a high rate of speed and struck a retaining wall.”

The Monona Police Department also said the area of Winnequah Road will remain shut down for several more hours while Madison Gas and Electric makes repairs to the downed power pole.

The driver’s name is not being released at this time pending family notification.
