MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- Community members had the opportunity to collect a memento from the old General Motors plant in Janesville on Saturday.

Blackhawk Community Credit Union collected 2,500 bricks from the old building that people took home. The bricks were from the back side of the administrative building. Organizers say the bricks serve as a reminder of the plants' workers, families, and generations of people affected by the building

"It's incredible, and anybody who thought this wasn't a big deal or it wasn't important to people - I think this tells the story," Dona Dutcher, Director of the Legacy Center, said.

Next week, organizers will have access to bricks from the smoke stack. The group will decide soon if another giveaway is in the works.
