MONROE, Wis. (WMTV) Multiple fire departments are fighting the flames at an apartment building on the southwest side of Monroe.

The call for service went out around 3:45PM Thursday. Green County dispatchers tell NBC15 News that the apartment fire is at Monroe Village Apartments, 1082 4th Ave. West in Monroe. Dispatchers say crews are both fighting the flames and helping residents get out of the building safely.

Two people were taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, according to Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits.

Smits said that they do not yet know the cause of the fire, which started in a second floor unit of the building. He said that the fire spread from the unit to the roof area, and that six to eight other units sustained smoke damage.

The Red Cross was on scene in Monroe, and said that several units of residents will be displaced Thursday night. Smits said that would be about eight to twelve people total.
