BELOIT, Wis. (WMTV)-- The Rock County District Attorney filed a homicide charge after police say a 20-year-old Beloit man shot and killed another man on November 21.
Ezequiel Acosta was arrested for killing Jose Carrera Reyes.
According to the Beloit Police Department, officers responded to a home on the 1700 block of Harrison Avenue at 8:15 p.m. Nov. 21. Police say Reyes was shot several times and later died at Mercy Hospital from his injuries.
According to the criminal complaint filed on Nov. 26, Acosta told police he grabbed a rifle after he heard someone trying to enter his home. The complaint states Acosta pushed Reyes outside of his home with the rifle and then started to shoot him.
According to the complaint, Acosta told detectives he was never attacked and did not say anything to Reyes. Acosta also stated he tried to run from his home because he didn't want to be arrested.
Beloit Police Chief David Zibolski said police are still working to find out more about how the two men are connected.
"There is some prior relations between the victim and persons in that house, including even the suspect," he said. "But exactly why he was there that evening and what led up to it is still a large part of the active investigation, and we're still trying to mesh those pieces together."
Acosta is expected to appear in Rock County Circuit Court for a bond hearing on Nov. 30.
A first degree intentional homicide charge was filed on Nov. 27. If convicted, Acosta faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
