Longtime Democratic Wisconsin state senator won't seek re-election

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Longtime Democratic Wisconsin state Sen. Dave Hansen has decided to retire, creating a tougher road to for his party to win a majority in the chamber this fall.

Hansen, of Green Bay, announced Thursday that he will retire when his current term ends next January.

Republicans currently hold a 19-14 majority in the Senate.

Hansen's decision to retire creates an open seat in a strongly Republican region, giving the GOP a prime opportunity to finally seize it.
