MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- Rahma Mohamed is a model, UW Madison mechanical engineer student, and Miss Muslimah Wisconsin USA. Oh yeah, she is only 17.
"People don't really know unless they ask," Mohamed said about her young age.
The California native graduated high school early, and is on track to do the same in college. She hopes to eventually become a pilot after graduation. Right now, all of her focus is on the Miss Muslimah USA pageant coming up in July.
"We are here to show that even with a hijab, there are no barriers with beauty, confidence, poise, grace and elegance," Mohamed said.
She is one of the youngest to compete in the national competition this year but is ranked in the top bracket based on results of a social media challenge.
After attacks on synagogues, mosques, and churches in the past decade, Mohamed is running on a platform promoting gun control and raising awareness on Islamophobia.
"By having this as a platform for my competition, I get to have a nationwide impact advocating for something I believe which doesnt just impact muslims but every religion that is facing hate crimes."
