SCAM ALERT: MGE customers targeted in latest phone scam

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) A new phone scam making the rounds in the Madison metro area targets Madison Gas and Electric customers.

According to MGE, the criminals are calling customers, claiming they work with the utility company and that the customers owe them money, whether for an overdue account or for "system upgrades." The scammers then tell the customers that if they aren't given credit/debit card numbers over the phone, their utility service will be shut off.

MGE's statement on the scam says the criminals are also able to manipulate caller IDs, making the call look like it originated from Madison Gas and Electric.

MGE's statement says if you get one of the calls, hang up, then contact Madison Gas and Electric at (608) 252-7222.
