Virginia Fugitive Captured in Jefferson

MADISON, Wis. – The Badgerland Fugitive Apprehension Squad arrested Betuel Ortiz-Martinez in Jefferson yesterday. Ortiz-Martinez was wanted by police in Fairfax County, Va., for the Dec. 17, 2006 murder of his brother-in-law.

Ortiz-Martinez has been on the run since the homicide and it is unknown how long he was residing in the Jefferson area. Ortiz-Martinez will appear before a Jefferson County judge and faces extradition back to Virginia.

Badgerland Fugitive Apprehension Squad members acted on information received from the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force in Alexandria, Va., that Ortiz-Martinez may be residing in Jefferson. Ortiz-Martinez offered no resistance when he was taken into custody.

Members of the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department, City of Jefferson Police Department and Lake Mills Police Department provided valuable assistance in bringing Ortiz-Martinez to justice.

The Badgerland Fugitive Apprehension Squad is a multi-jurisdictional task force comprised of law enforcement officers from the Madison Office of the U.S. Marshals Service, Dane County Sheriffs Department, City of Madison Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Corrections-Division of Probation and Parole and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
