Man Shot While Turkey Hunting

Release from Grant County Sheriff's Department:

On May 19, 2011, shortly after 9 a.m. James W. Wennerlind, 79, of Plymouth, MN was turkey hunting with his son and his guide 27 year old Matthew Raley of Platteville.

Wennerlind fell asleep and Raley went further out into the field to check the area for turkeys, when he turned around and started back towards the other two, Wennerlind woke up and thought Raley was a turkey and shot. Raley was about 25 yards away and was struck in the top of the head by pellets.

Raley and Wennerlind were transported to the Southwest Health Center in Platteville by private vehicles, where they were both treated and released.

The incident is still under investigation.
